The Nueces River delta is the nursery for the Gulf of Mexico. Divert too much of its freshwater inland and the estuary collapses — taking shrimp, fish, and the coastal economy with it. Texas water managers have established minimum freshwater flow requirements for the Nueces — a hard-won protection that keeps the estuary alive.
