The Los Angeles Aqueduct has carried water from Owens Valley to LA for over a century — draining a lake, killing a farming community, and turning a desert city into the second largest in America. LA imports 85% of its water from hundreds of miles away, and every one of those sources is under pressure. The city is investing in one of the largest water recycling programs in the world — a direct potable reuse system that could make LA water-independent within a generation.
