New York City has the largest municipal water supply system across the nation, and it is the largest unfiltered water supply system in the world providing more than a billion gallons of high-quality water daily to nearly 10 million people.

The City's Department of Environmental Protection manages, operates, and protects New York City’s upstate water supply system, associated facilities and aqueducts, over 100 miles of roads, 55 bridges, and more than 200,000 acres of watershed lands with close to 1,000 employees in and around the watershed. With a watershed covering nearly 2,000 square miles (nearly the size of the State of Delaware) the City works in partnership with all communities throughout the supply system ensuring the protection of high-quality water every day of the year.
