The Roadmap

Most Disaster-Resilient Nation

While we can’t stop the storms, we can help communities weather them better. Let’s support nature as our built-in first line of defense and plan smarter to protect our shared home.

Mile Markers

Build the buffer

Protect every American coastline, river, and neighborhood from flooding risk with storm-resilient, nature-based solutions.

Restoring wetlands, dunes, marshes, forests, and other natural barriers can absorb storm impacts while protecting homes, businesses, and communities.

Half the deaths

Cut disaster-related deaths in half.

Disasters happen but nobody should die because we weren’t ready. Better prevention, smarter infrastructure, and nature-based protection can help more people survive disasters like foods, fires, and extreme heat.

Stick to the rivers we’re used to

Restore 10 million acres of floodplain.

The low, flat areas of land next to a river, stream, or body of water are naturally prone to flooding when water overflows its banks. Restoring floodplains gives water somewhere else to go before it reaches homes, making ecosystems and communities more resilient.

Beat the heat

End heat-related deaths in American cities.

Heat kills more Americans than any other kind of extreme weather. Better preparation, education, and smarter natural defenses can change that.

Built to last

Upgrade every piece of critical American infrastructure to withstand a 100-year weather event.

Stronger infrastructure means we can keep roads, bridges, power, water, and other essentials working when communities need them most.

Ounce of prevention

Cut the economic cost of natural disasters by 50%.

Building smart before disaster strikes costs far less than rebuilding after. Smart investments before disasters strike can reduce damage, speed recovery, and save families, businesses, and taxpayers billions.

Proof of Progress

Restoring the Everglades to protect Florida’s communities

Across South Florida, restoring the Everglades means more than protecting this unique ecosystem. This 17,000 acre project is America’s largest restoration project! The Everglades Foundation is helping restore the natural movement of water toward the mangrove forest, salt marshes, and seagrass meadows to support wildlife and help shield millions of Floridians from storm flooding.
